The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), the Ontario Provincial Police and the Kingston Police invited media to attend a press conference at Collins Bay Institution to announce their first arrests in relation to drone activity at Collins Bay Institution.
On January 21, 2020, through the combined efforts of CSC staff, members of the OPP Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad and the Kingston Police, a number of contraband and unauthorized items were seized on the property of Collins Bay Institution.
The contraband and unauthorized items seized included 5.5 grams of heroin, 600 grams of marijuana, 11 bales of tobacco and one cell phone. The total estimated institutional value of this seizure is $75,000.
The individuals and inmate involved were arrested by the police and will face criminal charges.
CSC uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.
CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.
CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.
