Green Party leader Annamie Paul has the experience and policies, but will they be reflected at the polls
With the election of Annamie Paul as the new leader of the Federal Green Party, it officially signals the end to the Elizabeth May era. Althought Paul won the party’s leadership, there is work to be done among her supporters considering it took eight rounds of voting to secure the party’s leadership.
Paul, the gifted Toronto lawyer who has always been a strong advocate for climate policies and clean jobs. The Torontonian will have her work cut out for her as she looks to extend the party’s reach and membership.
For years, many have always thought the Green Party candidates are among the smartest in Canada but have consistently failed to garner the support of Canadians. The Greens have traditionally brought forth great ideas as a whole not just on climate change but on good governance, however, they have failed to articulate that message to all Canadians. The Greens will have to convince Canadians they are not just a party about saving the environment, they are a party filled with sound policies.
Paul currently does not hold a seat in the House of Commons and hope to change that as she will be running in the upcoming Toronto Centre byelection. The seat became available after the resignation of Liberal MP and former Finance Minister Bill Morneau. Paul will be running against star-studded Liberal candidate Marcy Lien, leader of the PPC Maxime Bernier, and Brian Chang healthcare worker for the NDP. The Conservative Party has not confirmed who will carry their banner in Morneau’s vacated seat.
If Paul is successful winning her seat in the upcoming by-election, she will be the first women of colour to hold a seat in Parliament as the leader of a political party within Canada.
