The findings detailed in ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman’: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza have reverberated globally, accusing Israel of carrying out genocide in the Gaza Strip. The investigation uncovers a deliberate campaign of destruction, marked by killings, severe harm, and conditions aimed at annihilating the population—acts that meet the legal definition of genocide under international law.
Following months of research, the offical report compiles evidence from interviews with over 200 individuals, fieldwork, satellite imagery, and statements from Israeli officials. It focuses on the aftermath of Israel’s military response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. While acknowledging the crimes committed by Hamas, the organization emphasizes that these acts cannot excuse the devastating policies inflicted on Gaza’s civilian population.
Amnesty International, a globally trusted human rights watchdog since 1961, has a long history of exposing atrocities. From apartheid in South Africa to the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, it has earned credibility for its rigorous and impartial investigations. This latest study is one of its most damning, accusing Israel of orchestrating acts designed to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians in Gaza.
The report highlights the staggering toll of Israel’s campaign, with over 42,000 Palestinians killed, including more than 13,300 children, since October 2023. The scale and persistence of actions such as mass killings, starvation, and forced displacement, according to the findings, reflect an intent to eliminate Gaza’s Palestinian population, extending beyond any legitimate military objectives.
The international community has not been spared criticism. Countries like the United States, Germany, and Canada continue to supply arms to Israel, thereby violating their legal obligations to prevent genocide. Amnesty’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, has issued an urgent call for action, urging world leaders to impose sanctions, halt arms transfers, and hold perpetrators accountable. “The evidence is undeniable. This is genocide, and it must stop now,” she stated.
For Canada, these findings demand urgent introspection. While some diplomatic measures have been taken, such as supporting ceasefire efforts and restoring funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency, Canada has yet to confront the implications of its arms exports. These supplies, directly or indirectly, sustain military operations described as genocidal.
This exposé challenges the global community to act decisively. History shows that inaction in the face of mass atrocities only emboldens those who commit them. The moment to intervene is now—before more lives are lost and justice is forever out of reach.
