All Vote No Play – An Award-Winning Campaign Integrating Civic Engagement in College Athletics – Launches The Team

New Nonprofit Aims to Establish Civic Engagement as a Priority in College Athletics. The Movement Has Helped Pass Groundbreaking NCAA Legislation, Built A Network of 54,000 Student Athletes, Coaches, Pro Athletes & Civic Leaders.

BOSTON, MA – Today the leadership of the All Vote No Play campaign – a nonpartisan movement focused on integrating civic engagement into college athletics – announced the formation of The Team.

The Team creates award-winning programming focused on integrating civic engagement into college athletics while offering a pathway for every athlete, coach, and administrator to become more engaged citizens. All Vote No Play will continue as a program under the new nonprofit.

“Nearly 600,000 student athletes are overlooked by most traditional civics programs, and yet, these athletes are often some of the most powerful voices and influential leaders on their campuses,” said Joe Kennedy, who serves as The Team’s first Executive Director.  “College athletics provides an opportunity to develop great teammates, inspire tomorrow’s leaders, and empower athletes to shape the future they want to be a part of. Building off the All Vote No Play movement, we are establishing The Team to meet this challenge.”

All Vote No Play started simply, with a tweet by Coach Eric Reveno, then Associate Head Coach for Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball. He observed that student-athlete civic engagement needed to be a greater priority, a sentiment that quickly gained traction online and caught the attention of Coach Joe Kennedy and Lisa Kay Solomon, Author and Designer in Residence at the Stanford Design School, who became instrumental in expanding the resources and reach of All Vote No Play.

“Initially, ‘All Vote No Play’ was just a hashtag thought of at the kitchen table,” said co-founder Coach Eric Reveno.  “It was sparked by student-athletes who felt like we all could do more. However, it quickly evolved into a movement thanks to the tireless dedication and visionary leadership of thousands of college coaches. Today we are taking the All Vote No Play movement to the next level, creating an organization that fosters stronger teams and better citizens in athletic departments across the country. The Team is that organization.”

Since 2020, the organization has engaged over 54,000 athletes, coaches, and administrators, planned over 600 ElectionDay events, and planned groundbreaking national programming with leaders such as Stephen Curry and Condoleezza Rice. All Vote No Play has also been recognized for numerous awards, including being recognized for Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas. Co-founder Lisa Kay Solomon sums up the unique design approach this way: “What would make it easy for student-athletes to take the first step? Every resource, program, and relationship is aimed to reduce the noise and friction of this moment, and focus instead on foundational moves to support democracy and ignite civic agency.”

In the fall of 2022, All Vote No Play spoke with athletes, coaches, administrators, and partners about how to improve and grow the organization. A conversation with athlete advisor Chase Griffin, UCLA quarterback and NIL Male Athlete of the Year, sparked the concept for creating The Team. “This year, All Vote No Play is transitioning to becoming The Team,” said Griffin, “and  we’re ready to make more change than ever before.”
