Wolseley residents do the job of incompetent city bureaucrats.
Winnipeg- After weeks of closure of the Omand’s Creek bridge, the bridge was finally re-opened to citizens. The bridge was caught in a bureaucratic nightmare-before-Christmas saga where city staff said time and time again they could not reopen the bridge due to safety issues from frozen ice. The bridge is part of the City of Winnipeg’s active transportation system. Despite city staff saying it could not be done, only two citizens armed with an axe and shovel worked for 1 hour & removed all the ice from the bridge, forcing the city to remove the barricades.
The city though continued to fight and said the bridge needed to be inspected by an engineer, and there were multiple other safety concerns. City councillors also weighed in and said it was improper for citizens to take these actions.
Citizen Gerald Danais wrote this on his Facaebook account, which sums up people’s feelings.
City: WE CAN’T DO IT!
Citizens: We did it!
City: WE DON’T HAVE THE RESOURCES!
Citizens: We did it!
City: WE FOUND AN ENGINEER TO INSPECT IT, THE BRIDGE IS FINE!
Citizens: We know, we did it!
City councillors: YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE DONE IT!
Citizens: DO YOUR JOB!
