Alberta Finally Goes Into Lockdown After Record Setting Day Of COVID19 Infection

Over 1,700 Albertans infected with COVID-19 within 24 hours

Alberta has the been the last Canadian Province to put in place strict COVID-19 measures as the rate of infections and deaths continue to Sky Rocket. In the last 24 hours, Alberta has reported over 1,700 new cases which is a clear indication of the lack of understanding of the virus by the Premier.

Just a few days before, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi publicly voiced his disapproval of the the Premier’s handling of the pandemic. “I won’t hesitate to take further action to protect the citizens of Calgary if the province does not,” Nenshi said.

It is important to note, the Calgary Mayor has had a great working relationship with leaders of government. And, for him to come out and publicly voice his concerns is a significant moment.

The new Provincial regulations went into effect on December 8, and remain in place until January 12, 2021 with hopes of bending the curb.

Effective Dec. 8, all indoor and outdoor social gatherings are prohibited. This will be enforced with $1,000 fines with a potential of it being increased to $10,000 pending on the severity of the violation.

• Close contacts are limited to household members only
• People who live alone can have up to 2 close contacts:
  • must be the same two contacts throughout the duration of the restriction
  • if the close contacts do not live alone, visits cannot be held at their home
  • single parents who only live with their children under 18 are permitted to have up to 2 close contacts

Additional provisions have now been put in place for places of worship, education, commerce, social gatherings such as weddings and funerals. Albertans have a responsibility to slow the virus’s spread and make sure the health system can continue supporting patients with COVID-19, influenza and many other needs.
