Rickey Henderson, the legendary Hall of Famer and Major League Baseball’s all-time stolen base leader, passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 65. He succumbed to complications from pneumonia in the Oakland area, just days before his 66th birthday.
Born on December 25, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, Henderson’s family moved to Oakland, California, when he was two years old. He began his MLB career with the Oakland Athletics in 1979, marking the start of a remarkable 25-season journey that included tenures with nine teams. Henderson’s unparalleled speed and base-stealing prowess earned him the nickname “Man of Steal.” He holds MLB records for career stolen bases (1,406), runs scored (2,295), and leadoff home runs (81).
Throughout his career, Henderson achieved numerous accolades, including:
- 10× All-Star (1980, 1982–1988, 1990, 1991)
- 2× World Series Champion (1989 with Oakland Athletics, 1993 with Toronto Blue Jays)
