On December 8, 2024, 34-year-old Alisha Brooks was fatally shot near Jones Avenue and Hunter Street in Toronto. Her boyfriend, 33-year-old Aaron Shea, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

Shea was on statutory release at the time of the incident, following a three-year and one-month sentence for previous offenses, including assault and break and enter with intent. Parole Board of Canada documents reveal a history of violence in intimate relationships and substance abuse issues. The board had imposed residency conditions upon his release to mitigate the risk to the public.

Brooks was remembered by her mother as a “loving mother, daughter, cousin, and niece,” who was “vibrant, full of energy and truly lit up a room with her presence.” She had previously worked as an outreach worker for the CHEERS program, providing mentorship to Black youth.

Shea remains in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for January 10, 2025. The charge of first-degree murder has not yet been tested in court.
