As Syria begins to navigate a path toward recovery, renewed violence in the northeast is putting fragile progress at risk. Angelita Caredda, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s (NRC) Middle East and North Africa Regional Director, expressed concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis, warning that continued hostilities could deepen the suffering of displaced populations and hinder vital aid efforts.

While some cities have experienced stabilization, the recent surge in fighting has displaced tens of thousands, forcing families into collective shelters like schools. These individuals face harsh conditions, struggling to secure essentials such as food, drinking water, and heating as winter approaches. Inflation has compounded these challenges, leaving vulnerable communities without the means to meet basic needs.

The NRC is urging all sides in Syria to de-escalate and avoid targeting civilian areas and infrastructure. Caredda emphasized the importance of allowing humanitarian organizations to operate safely, ensuring that aid can reach those in need. Additionally, she called for sustained funding and long-term support to help displaced Syrians rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities.

Despite the ongoing crisis, the humanitarian response remains severely underfunded. Only one-third of the 2024 Syria Humanitarian Response Plan has been financed, creating significant gaps in aid delivery. This shortfall threatens the ability of organizations like the NRC to provide critical support to millions of displaced people both within the country and across the region.

Caredda called for global action, stating, “For years, the world has turned away from addressing the crisis in ways that secure people’s long-term safety and future. This is the moment to ensure that all civilians can transition into a safer, inclusive Syria, guided by their rights and aspirations.”

Reports estimate that around 100,000 individuals have been displaced in recent weeks due to the ongoing conflict in the northeast. However, fluid developments on the ground make it challenging to determine precise numbers.

The NRC’s appeal highlights the urgent need for de-escalation, protection of civilians, and increased international support. Without immediate action, the prospects for recovery and stability in Syria remain precarious, leaving countless lives hanging in the balance.
