“England struggled to find the back of the net with four minutes of regulation time left to play despite creating several attacking churns in the opponent’s half. All offensive cards proved abortive as they teased Spain’s defensive armada for cracks but found none.”

The 2-1 glorious victory of Spain over England in yesterday’s final game of the UEFA Germany Euro 2024 soccer tournament shot the country into European soccer history books 12 years after they last won the trophy in Ukraine and 14 years after they secured their first FIFA World Cup at South Africa 2010.

Spain’s recognizable task force of strikers lived up to its profile. While the first half recorded no goals from either end, the Spaniards provided a curtain-raiser in the second half after Lamine Yamal gifted an assist to his attacking mate.  A smooth and composed strike from Nico Williams at England’s right defensive flank in the 47th minute left Jordan Pickford in England’s goal in helplessness and defeat as the ball sailed past.

Spain almost went ahead again but spurned their chances to keep the English in the game. Jordan Pickford made brilliant saves on occasions when his defensive line nearly let him down, denying the Spaniards scoring chances repeatedly.

England seized the moment when Cole Palmer came on for Kobbie Mainoo. Riding on the back of a Jude Bellingham laydown pass, he executed an equally clinical ground shot that slashed through the defence to beat Spain’s Unai Simon at his right side of the post. That 73rd-minute strike was the last goal of the tournament for England.

One of the vital principles of knockout soccer is defensive caution and surprise attack. Spain took this lesson to heart, executing a coup de grace in the 86th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal slotted past Jordan Pickford inside the box courtesy of a charitable pass from Marc Cucurella.

England struggled to find the back of the net with four minutes of regulation time left to play despite creating several attacking churns in the opponent’s half. All offensive cards proved abortive as they teased Spain’s defensive armada for cracks but found none.

Yesterday’s final game lacked a gusher of goals despite being a turbocharged night of some elegantly gifted legs in the European soccer galaxy.

Both teams were cleverly alert to each other’s aggressive tactics. England went away with another defeat in a European soccer final, the last being four years prior. On the other hand, Spain achieved their fourth Euro trophy with that magnificent display that showed class, skills, and superiority.

The United Kingdom and Ireland will host the next European soccer championship in the summer of 2028.
