The Biden-Harris Administration has announced a series of actions aimed at preserving African American history ahead of Juneteenth National Independence Day. These actions include:
- Signing into law the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing June 19th as a federal holiday.
- Designating the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument.
- Posthumously awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Medgar Evers.
Additionally, the administration is organizing a live-streamed event to highlight federal efforts to protect and preserve African American history. This event aims to engage the public in commemorating Juneteenth and uplifting the experiences of Black Americans.
Vice President Harris has declared Juneteenth as one of three National Days of Action on Voting, focusing on voter engagement and combating voter suppression, particularly within marginalized communities.
Efforts are also underway to digitize historical resources and support educational programs that deepen public understanding of African American history. The administration is investing in local institutions and community-based organizations dedicated to preserving African American heritage.
Amid these initiatives, the administration is cognizant of the importance of minority voters, whose support has significantly impacted recent elections. These efforts to preserve African American history may serve as an unofficial bid to regain support from key demographics.
