Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, welcomed the final report from the Canada Electricity Advisory Council today. The report, titled “Powering Canada: A Blueprint for Success,” presents 28 recommendations aimed at guiding Canada’s shift to a clean, reliable, and affordable electricity grid.
This comes at a crucial time as Canada aims to achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050. Wilkinson stressed the importance of a decarbonized grid to meet these climate goals, noting that electricity infrastructure needs to expand to support the growing demand from Canadian households and businesses. This expansion and decarbonization of the grid are expected to cover nearly 40 percent of Canada’s long-term climate commitments.
Formed in May 2023, the Canada Electricity Advisory Council includes experts from various sectors, such as Indigenous partners, utilities, regulators, and think tanks. Led by Philippe Dunsky, the Council held 80 meetings and engaged with over 100 stakeholders to develop its detailed recommendations.
The report highlights that a clean and reliable grid will be economically beneficial for Canadians, potentially leading to significant savings. Currently, over 80 percent of Canada’s electricity is emissions-free, providing a strong foundation for further improvements. The country’s non-emitting grids have already attracted over $50 billion in investments in the electric vehicle supply chain in the past two years.
Minister Wilkinson expressed gratitude for the Council’s efforts, noting that their recommendations will significantly influence the upcoming Clean Electricity Strategy, expected later this year. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among federal, provincial, and territorial governments, as well as with Indigenous communities and industry stakeholders, to ensure a successful transition.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, agreed, highlighting the opportunity to build a clean electricity system. He pointed out that new regulations for cleaner power plants are driving investments in renewable energy, positioning Canada as a leader in the global clean energy market.
Philippe Dunsky, Chair of the Canada Electricity Advisory Council, emphasized Canada’s strong position in the transition to a clean energy economy. He called for thoughtful actions, considering regional differences and reducing bureaucratic obstacles to foster a competitive, clean electricity system.
