The announcement of Lise Grande as the Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues by President Biden has stirred both skepticism and frustration among critics. Many question the timing of this appointment, coming in the aftermath of the October 7th attacks, which further plunged Gaza into chaos and devastation.

Critics argue that while Grande’s credentials may be impressive, her appointment feels like mere grandstanding in the face of ongoing oppression and human rights violations against the people of Gaza and Palestine. They point out that high-level officials from the US, world leaders, the United Nations, and the Security Council have long been engaged in efforts to find solutions to the conflict, yet little progress has been made.

The appointment of Grande is seen by some as another political maneuver lacking real impact or teeth. Despite her qualifications, doubts persist about her ability to effect meaningful change, especially given the entrenched interests and power dynamics at play.

Moreover, critics highlight the glaring contradiction in US policy towards Israel. While purportedly advocating for humanitarian concerns, the US continues to provide unwavering support to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, supplying billions of dollars in aid and military weapons. This support, critics argue, only serves to embolden a regime accused of warmongering and exacerbating the suffering of civilians.

In essence, while Grande’s appointment may be a step in the right direction, its effectiveness remains questionable in the absence of genuine political will to address the root causes of the conflict and hold all parties accountable for their actions.
