6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Rocked Jishishan County in China’s Gansu Province

The aftermath of the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked Jishishan County in China’s Gansu Province has seen the death toll climb to over 130. In response to the escalating crisis, a field hospital has been swiftly established in the epicentre’s largest resettlement camp, aiming to provide critical medical care to the victims. Reporter Guo Tianqi ventured into the heart of the disaster to shed light on the ongoing efforts to address the rising health needs.

Amid the devastation, the four trucks of Gansu Provincial Hospital’s field hospital highlight the urgency. Having already treated more than 50 patients affected by the earthquake, this facility has become a crucial lifeline in the face of tragedy. Responding within four hours of the earthquake on that fateful Monday night, the field hospital boasts a dedicated team of over 30 medical professionals working tirelessly in shifts.

“We have one truck for water and power, one for the laboratory, one for X-rays, and the other one can perform surgeries. This forms a hospital complex for comprehensive treatment, including wound sutures, injections, and transfusions.” Said, Hao Xiangyong, Professor, Gansu Provincial Hospital

Among those seeking refuge, 76-year-old villager Malabiye, who suffered a head injury during the earthquake, is currently undergoing a thorough medical examination.

“I was sleeping alone when the earthquake struck. I heard a huge sound, I looked up, and the whole roof caved in. My head and shoulders were smashed, and blood was running down my neck.”

The majority of patients in the field hospital are grappling with physical injuries, primarily fractures. Those with severe wounds are immediately transported to higher-level hospitals by ambulance. By conducting regular drills once or twice a year, the field hospital ensures that its medical staff can respond promptly in emergencies of this magnitude.
